CCleaner does not remove viruses. MalwareBytes Anti-Malware is about the best tool to scan for and remove viruses and malware.

Registry Cleaners and registry optimizers have no effect on performance in any realistic case. They also, in the vast majority of cases, only fix problems that are invisible. For example, they will fix a registry link to a non-existent file, but that link won’t do anything anyway.

A “registry optimizer” may just be a registry cleaner with a cooler-sounding name. But it can also include tools that defragment your registry or remove empty space inside the registry files. Sometimes “registry optimizer” also change registry settings that are said to optimize your system’s performance. In my experience, most of these are snake oil.

Maybe 8 years ago or so there were systems that weren’t tuned properly for Internet access or not properly tuned to recognize modern CPUs. However, this is not a problem with a modern operating system (such as Vista or Windows 7), nor is it a problem on Windows XP if you have service pack 2 or later (which you certainly should).

Modern operating systems and service packs were tweaked with modern hardware in mind. And the assumption is that the computer will be connected to the Internet. In fact, many of the old tweaks make things worse now. (And many ‘optimizers’ realize this, check to see that you don’t need the tweak, and claim to have ‘optimized’ the setting by not doing anything.)
