Famous Problems $12.78 Any band that would name themselves the Butterflies of Love (a French euphemism for pubic crabs) probably has a higher level of cynicism than the average Joe, and the third album from the Connecticut-based group, Famous Problems, would tend to confirm this; this is dark, faintly garage-influenced indie rock that suggest a shotgun marriage between the Ass Ponys and Green on Red, with an extra helping of fuzzed-out guitars and cheap organ up front. The Butterflies of Love also generate more than their fair share of bad karma on these tunes, especially on the bitter “Lies Will Sound Like the Truth” or “In a Blizzard in a Lighthouse” which unearths a palpable sense of abstract dread. But while no one is about to accuse these guys of being Party Gods, they sure know how to write a song and make a record, and Famous Problems connects solidly after a few spins. Leaders Jeff Greene and David Greene bring strong, emotionally expressive melodies to these tunes, and their vocals communicate a dozen shades of angst without edging into self-pity or narcissism, documenting busted lives in the less fashionable environs of the East Coast with journalistic accuracy and a poet’s balance of sorrow and compassion. The Greene’s bandmates back them up with simple but forceful rock & roll that brings forth both the beauty and the sorrow of their psych-tinged folk-rock with maximum emotional impact. Dog Problems $7.98 Tired of lamenting the split from a significant other locked in a dark room with Bright Eyes on repeat? Ready to turn that pain into a joyous singalong outside under the bright sun? Lucky for you, Arizona’s the Format — barely appearing phased at being dropped by Atlantic in 2005 — have arrived with their self-released sophomore full-length, Dog Problems. Sure the album is mostly about singer Nate Ruess’ most recent breakup and subsequent broken heart, but seriously, it’s hands-down the feel-good album of the summer. After all, the heartache-induced lyrics of sarcasm and bitterness are in direct contrast to the sonic warmth emanating from every note-filled corner. Deftly elaborating on the sweet indie pop affair of 2003′s Interventions and Lullabies, the guys have moved past straightforward ditties to craft songs that incorporate a wide range of instruments, tones, and occasionally, full-on orchestrations. “Time Bomb” immediately launches forth with exuberant vocal harmonies before the key-dancing chorus boogies to the front; the ironically catchy “The Compromise” — which is the defiant result of Atlantic asking for a pop hit — can be called radio-friendly in the best sense of the term. From a whimsical, carnival-esque air that appears sporadically throughout, the Format mix in horn sections, piano, banjo, handclaps and pretty much whatever else was lying around the studio when recording commenced. But every element is cleanly pulled off with such effortless charm, grace, and style that the songs in no way feel bogged down under the weight of the bands’ ambition. The music never sounds forced or like the band is simply trying to be different through gimmicks; they’ve just matured into a new skin that fits as delightfully as their old. The Format were already showing obvious signs of being unable to write a bad song on Lullabies, but Dog Problems simply glows from beginning to end. It’s like the music (both the gentle songs and high-energy ones) just can’t help being fun and catchy, even if for some reason it didn’t want to. Welfare Problems $10.18 “I guess you wanna see the look on my face when you smash it,” Randy mouthpiece Stefan Granberg sneers on “A Man in Uniform.” The Modern Lovers/Ramones-style singalong is only one of the high points on the Swedish quartet’s seventh full-length, Welfare Problems, an album that finds Randy’s ideology undiluted by the addition of buzzing guitar hooks and shoutable choruses to its punk rock roots. Together with drummer Fredrik Granberg, guitarist Johan Brandstrom, and bassist Johan Gustafsson, Granberg pogos his way through a set establishing Randy as another band from the land of the midnight sun that gleefully soaks its garage-y punk with influences as disparate as 1950s rock (the barroom piano of “Cheap Thrills,” the scrappy Eddie Cochran bitching of the title track) and sugary 1970s arena anthems (the fabulous “X-Ray Thrills” hits up the chorus of Cheap Trick and intersects it with “Oi! Oi! Oi!”‘s and cooing female backing vocals). This all builds some extremely entertaining platforms for Randy’s staunchly socialist stumping. On the album opener, “Dirty Tracks,” the band lays out its plan for a government-center takeover that’ll be accompanied by the sound of ringing guitars. While kids throw bricks and burn tires, Granberg re-imagines Roger Daltrey’s classic celebration of youth as a political rallying cry. “I hope I’m dead before I’m old,” he screams. “Honey, you and I have been bought and sold.” While its 12 songs go by pretty fast, and some glimpses into the past aren’t as successful as others (“Ruff Stuff”‘s channeling of Johnny Rotten is a little trite), producer Pelle Gunnerfeldt (International Noise Conspiracy, the Hives) accentuates each song with touches of fuzz and a perfect mix of lead and supporting vocals. The dubbed crowd noise in “My Heart, My Enemy” is a particularly nice touch, giving its chorus a plaintive feel that’s a relief from the band’s normal hard-driving sneer. But if you think this latter track is setting up a feel-good ending to Welfare Problems, think again. After a whispered intro, the album-closing “Dirty and Cheap” peels out of a dark alley with sparks flying and guns blaring. “I’m f*cking pissed man,” Granberg begins, and proceeds to tear off another hunk of authority’s flesh over the din of his band.
